if members of congress were required to serve, nothing would ever be accomplished.
We'd have all of them trying to tell our troops what to do, because most of congress think they know everything.

and when they did maybe they can see what blow hards they are sending our brave people to fight a war and talk bad about them wile they are being shot at, I got a better ideal, take away all the police guarding capital hill let some tarriest in give guns I think the U.S. would be a better place for us all, heck wouldn't hurt in the Senate either, let them get a taste of some back stabbing and a taste of lead. a lot less wars and or better understanding of whats going on. And if they are on the front ines they would know the truth and could vote the right way.

I've always said that all citizens of this country should serve for 6 months after graduating H.S.
It could be in the National Guard or maybe working in a VA hospital or cleaning up the national parks. Think of the difference this would make.
I just don't think getting a tax cut is service enough.

What Bill Clinton serve? Nancy Pelosi serve? How about have them stand in front of a bus of innocents being slaughtered by a terrorist, maybe they will think twice before they undermine the troops.

They wouldn't last that long and I wouldn't want to be the one baby sitting them.
I do think that many of them should go on patrol with the units. I think the opposite would happen.
Let them go with my guys in my AO. That's where they will see two newly established city councils (democracy in action), infrastructure that was left rotting by Saddam Hussien being repaired and made functional again, children in the streets talking and interacting with our soldiers, and people working together and helping each other in their communities.
Hell, I'd be happy is an unbiased JOURNALIST would follow one of my patrols and actually printed on page one what they learned.

I think personally it would be good if all males had to serve at least 3 years in the military.

They couldn't handle it. They are all to used to having their aids do everything for them. They do need to head to Iraq and talk to the troops though. And not just the Generals. The Privates opinion is just as important.

Sacrifices for what you do for your country should be recognized before you sign the dotted line. Members of congress should service at least 6 years of active duty service before becoming members of congress.

That would only make the current situation more dangerous. However, they SHOULD be required to visit the military hospitals and veterans centers to see the results of the war, and the kind of care and treatment our soldiers are getting---some of it is disgraceful.
