White is THE BEST color for opening up a room. period. Go with the purest white you can get.

Generally less saturated colors make spaces look bigger. Really bright colors like tulip yellow can be confusing and give rooms that "congested" feel you describe. I'd recommend a light pastel type color, this will open the space up a bit.

White or off white is also an option, but this can look dingy if there isn't alot of light in the area. If it gets good natural light then I think white or maybe if you still wanted yellow a light pastel.

If it doesn't get alot of light then maybe a very light pastel blue shade will help to bring out its character more.

Try something very bright and saturated. Sometimes its a nice surprise to go a little more dark for an entry way and have the rooms down the hall be brighter; the lighter areas help pull you into the house. Once you enter into brighter rooms, it makes them feel all the more bright and cheery, even if they are not due to the contrast.

Actually the color is less important in light shades than how light they are. The idea that color creates illusion regarding size is certainly valid, but any light shade of any already light color creates more of a light reflective surface, and depending on actual lighting in your hall you can use any number of pastel colors to their lightest shades. COLOR itself is as personal a choice as perhaps are religion and politics.

you could paint the walls white or a VERY VERY light shade of yellow. If you have crown moulding you could paint the crown a shade or two darker than the walls.

Dark colors make small spaces seem even smaller, so use white or any other light color.
