I read it on my bank's website, but now I can't find the page. I was just wondering what this obscure holiday was! My accountant doesn't even know why?!?!?

On January 24, 2007, the Internal Revenue Service announced that taxpayers across the nation would have until Tuesday, April 17, 2007, to file their 2006 returns and pay any taxes due.

Taxpayers will have extra time to file and pay because April 15 falls on a Sunday in 2007, and the following day, Monday, April 16, is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia.

Because it is a holiday in the district of columbia.

Per the IRS website:
District of Columbia Emancipation Day. District of Columbia Emancipation Day, celebrated April 16, is a new legal holiday for federal tax purposes.

If your accountant doesn't know why, I would be looking for a new accountant. This is pretty simple to find out and it is in all the publications that accountants read all the time.
