You can buy baby chicks from one of the following hatcherys.
They run anywhere from about $1.79 up to 3.50 or so each.

You can buy them over the web for a few bucks to a couple hundred, if you get the fancy show birds. The catch is they usually only sell bunches or starter flocks. You may have a hard time there if you only want one. You could go to a local farmers supply store or feed and seed store. All of the Tractor Supply stores in my area sell them. They usually start selling chicks in the spring, or find some body that has a few and make an offer. Chickens are fairly easy to care for once they become adults.

Baby chicks sell for around a couple dollars. Depending on where you live, is where you can find one. A lot of time feed stores will carry them (grange stores). Otherwise if you're in a city they might have them at a pet store. If you're looking for an adult chicken you could probably find a farm somewhere that has chickens and see if they would sell you one. The only expensive ones are the ones that are show chickens. I don't know if you're interested in that, but they tend to be more expensive, and we're not talking hundreds here.

Pet shops, local farmers, stock feed and produce stores.

They are only a few dollars each but can be up to $20 each if they are a hen at the point of lay (meaning they are due to start producing eggs), or already laying.

It can be hard to tell the sex of a chicken when it is young though. So if you want to be sure, buy them at a few months of age.

You can get alot for free...I"m giving mine away free. Babies at a feed store are usually like $4.00...try flea markets..
