are they good or do you only learn enough chinese to speak like a tourist?

Of course they aren't useful!
If you want to study Chinese, you should go to a Taiwanese or Chinese university, only then will you be able to speak good Chinese.
Sorry, that was a bit strongly worded - basically, I wasted a lot of my time in the UK on one of these courses - it got me just about no where, I bought a 'Teach yourself Chinese' book - again - hopeless (even my Chinese friends could point out loads of mistakes and problems with it)!
I suggest going to either country, joining a university class - they usually run 2 hours a day - 5 days a week. That way you learn in a Chinese environment and to make ends meet you can teach English!
That's just my suggestion though - it all depends on what level Chinese you want - I've been studying 'very hard' for a year and can type in Chinese now.

chinese is hard to learn. I am currently learning chinese. First you actually need to recognise sounds and tones. I would suggest watching some mandarin movies so you get to hear the sounds. Then get tapes, and books. Find a mandarin speaking person and practice with them. It will take a lot longer than 8 weeks. I would familarize myself with sone chinese before I took a class. Also if you are spending money anyway Rosetta Stone is a good buy. Good Luck.

I would recommend you a website http://www.exelchinese.com , which is teaching Chinese live online. If you only for traval in China, 8 weeks are enough to communicate with Chinese people at survival level.

well...learn the basics: pronunciation and writing, so you understand what you read....try it and then practice!
