Because Apple's software only runs on Apple's hardware, which you can buy at a special Apple price.

It's getting better now, but it used to be that you could easily buy 3 PCs for one Apple.
And all your friends have PCs, so exchanging software and data is much more easy.
The choice is easy: Cheaper, more software and more friends.

There's a lot of ignorance here...

Microsoft was not first in this business. Apple was started in 1976 by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Microsoft was drooling for the opportunity to work with Apple. They then ripped off the original Macintosh GUI to create Windows 1.0.

PCs are not cheaper than Macs. PCs with similar hardware are often more expensive.

It is not easier to share files on PCs.

PCs can't run everything. They can't run Mac OS X. Macs can run everything, from Mac OS X to Linux and Windows.

You see? This is why most people use PCs, because they lack any knowledge of the Mac platform. They just repeat the same old garbage they're heard about Macs from other PC users. Most of them have never used a Mac, especially not a new Intel Mac running Mac OS X Tiger. In general, PC users are tools. There is hope, though. More and more PC users are switching to Mac these days. Mac sales are rising at a faster rate than any PC manufacturer. People are finally figuring out that Windows is a crappy product and there are better choices to be made.

Locked in? Yes, but now that Windows runs natively on Macs, the choice is clear.

In the early 80's, Apple actually was slightly ahead of Microsoft in terms of general use home PCs. But, the roads diverged because Microsoft agreed to make their Windows operating system work on any PC that fit a certain criteria. Apple decided to only allow their operating system to work on Apple hardware and the hardware of a small number of manufacturers. There were a series of other management mistakes at Apple at that time, but I can't go into them all.

So, Windows became available on cheaper and cheaper computers, and more people had Windows computers, and more programs started getting written for Windows than for any of the competition.

Now things are going the other way. Many believe that total cost of ownership of a Mac is cheaper than a Windows PC (free photo, music and video creation software out of the box, no need to get antivirus or antispyware software). But, now many people are "locked in" with necessary software for their businesses only running on top of Windows.

Because windows runs on intel and amd processors, and the hardware is cheaper, much cheaper than Apple's. Because of hardware independance people tend to use copied version of windows and other software. I think in India about ninety percent of computers could be using unpurchased copies, that amounts to the popularity of Microsoft

Because they are cheaper, when Apple started there were a lot of computers from Microsoft, and if people have one kind, the other people are going to buy the same.

That's because Apple has a limited marketability. PCs are less expensive and more upgradeable, and that's why businesses use them. Add to that the fact that they're just as capable as Macs in terms of video and photo editing, and you have a more popular platform.

because if you have an apple you have limited software choices because apple is very uptight about licensing, but PCs can run pretty much anything. As for software quality both are similar apple is just more stable because they only have a few configurations where PCs have almost limitless configurations.

Apple's stuff is far and away BETTER, but people don't want to learn a new system. (OS X) If people would take the time to use it or learn it they would like it so much better than windows. I can use both and have been for years and Mac's are way easier to use and have alot fewer problems.

Because most programs run on PC. If a programmer creates a program for a PC, then the person who desires to use the program will be forced to buy a PC. And the cycle goes on.
