Fasting is a time when Christians will pray in place of their normal eating time. Traditionally, you would skip one or more meals (remember to drink water though!!) and use that time to pray and listen to God. Some people cannot do this right away and need to build up to it. Maybe just eat half of your lunch or something. The key is sacrifice. You are giving up food and your own priorities to make time for God.

Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
Matthew 4:4

In the Bible it says that Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights. You go without a meal. You can drink water. People fast today because they pray and they follow what Jesus did. It may not be for forty days though.

Fasting is to go without solid food. The purpose of fasting is not to twist God's arm but to weaken our physical body so that our spirit can become more sensitive to the the promptings and relevelations of God when we pray.
