Get him into counseling! NOW!
He just lost his mom! That will have a huge physical, emotional, and psychological effect on him. He will grieve and cope in any number of ways. Since he is turning to alcohol, he is displaying an outward sign of coping. At least he reacting to it. But you can never see what's going on in his head. He needs help. His world just went crazy.
Get him into counseling. Now. Please....do not hesitate.

Your scared, think of how scared he is. Is his father around? You need to help him, he might think he doesn't need it, but he does. The scariest thing..is you will probably lose him..not your own kids. If you instill good morals in your own children, with out make the other boy feel like he is in ridicule, they should be fine. As for the boy that needs help, he cried..that means he grieved, but that doesn't mean he is done, he could also be in denial. "Hold his hand", so to speak, walk with him, take him to church, he needs to find him self again, after all, he did lose his mom. talk to the school counselor, they are very good at helping, go to support groups. He could possible feel alone, like no one knows how he feels. talk to your local church, they could be helpful with finding a place you guys can go to talk. He might need that as well, just to talk about it. Take baby steps, it's hard losing someone that close.

You should continue to be supportive to him. Let him know that you are worried about him and why you are worried. You could offer to seek counseling and go with him. I would suggest checking out AA also. Hope things get brighter for you and your friend. Good luck!
