That is a hard question. I was born with 2 kidneys but 1 1/2 yrs ago I was told that I had a tumor in my kidney and it was cancer (dr said he was 99.9% + it was even though he refused to do a biopsy which I asked for). I went in to have part of my kidney removed ... ended up lossing the whole kidney b/c "the tumor was in my blood supply". Then the day I was discharged I was told that oops he made a mistake....he had removed a healthy kidney from me (no cancer...NO TUMOR...nothing) and for me to just consider myself a kidney donor even though no one received my kidney! I have had nothing but problems since this has happened and was even told last month that I will probably be on dialysis w/in the next 5 yrs and needing a transplant myself. I know I would have taken these risks for a loved one but I'm not sure if I would have for a complete stranger....even though I will probably be hoping someone is willing to give to me soon. This is my opinion about the experience that I have had. I have attached a site that will help with living donor info.

I would not give my kidney to a stranger, unless I was the last person on the planet to save that person's life. I would only give one of my kidneys to a person I love: family / partner / close friends. Donating a kidney means that you will have to take lots of pills each day for the rest of your life. You will have to change your life and you may day younger than with two kidneys.

Obviously this would vary from person to person. You have to ask yourself, why are you doing this? Are you doing it to make yourself feel better about yourself, or are just so darn altruistic that you feel it is your duty to help other people, even strangers, to the extent of giving away your vital organs?
You have to remember, while you do have two kidneys, you will need them for the rest of your life. You only need one to live but God, or whoever you prefer, gave you two so that in case one fails you have a backup. For a close family member, sure I would consider it. For one of my children, don't even have to ask, just take it. But for a complete stranger, an average citizen, not likely that I personally would consider going that far. But I am sure there are plenty of others like yourself who are willing to go to that extent.
I would think you could search the internet and find more info quite easily. Best of luck.

To be honest, I wouldn't proactively volunteer to have one of my kidneys removed for donation to a complete stranger. If it were for kin or kith, I'd be much more tempted to do so. Sorry if I do seem aloof and uncompassionate, but doing that sort of thing would be injurious to my health in the short run, and I don't think I'd have a compelling enough reason to do it.

is this an actual question? Personally, I won't, unless that stranger and I had a significant thing that happened between us.
But this world could use some generous people..so i'll think about it ..

No, but only because a close friend or family may need one later on. It probably sounds selfish, but at least i'm being honest.
