I think what some people are giving you is great practical advice on losing weight; but, I think what you really need right now is support. You need somebody to talk to and to understand. Absent the support you will continue to struggle.

Your mother doesn't seem to understand how difficult it can be for you - or, maybe your mother has a weight problem too. Some people seek to fulfil emotional needs with comfort food, this may be what is going on here.

Remember two things:
1) your mother is a good person who loves you and cares for you; but, that doesn't mean she's always able to do what's best for you. She may not know how, and she has her own problems too.
2) the one thing you do have control over in your life is what you put in your mouth.

Both 1 and 2 will be easier for you, if you have someone you can confide in. If you can't find that support, then at least keep a diary.

You CAN do it. You ARE capable, and you ARE worth it.

Best Wishes,

I had a similar problem. My mom loves cooking pasta and potatoes and buys cakes and cookies and stuff like that.
So, I learned how to cook and I prepare my own meals.
Try putting the fatty and sugary foods at the back of the fridge and put healthy food up front, so that you just grab the food and close the fridge. :)
Try eating 5-6 small meals a day. Fruit, vegetables, low-fat mils products (yogurt, cottage cheese), whole-wheat bread, cereals, poultry and fish. Do not skip meals and always have breakfast, because it boosts your metabolism in the morning.
Cut sugar. Use sweeteners, or honey, or brown sugar if you must.
Drink water. At least 8 glasses of spring water a day. You can drink a cup or two of herbal tea.
Working out is great. If you have to study, try this: Whenever you take a break from studying (every hour or so), do a couple of crunches, or any other exercise. Turn on your favorite music and dance to a song or two. I know how hard is to sit all day, and dancing, or a couple of sit-ups are gonna be great for your body and mind.
You don't have to go to the gym to work out. Instead of a treadmill - walk around the block a couple of times; instead of a stepper - try walking up and down any stairs; etc.
Go for a walk before you go to bed (if you don't live in a dangerous neighborhood), then take a shower or a bath and you'll sleep like a baby. :)
If you really cannot stand not eating a cake, try eating half of what you'd usually eat.
Don't strain yourself too much. Listen to your body. Life isn't all about losing weight. You're young and if you stick to exercise and proper diet, you're gonna lose weight soon.
Just remember that you haven't piled on weight over night, and you're sure not going to lose weight in a couple of days.
But be persistent and you'll make it. :) Good luck!

i am not going to tell you to get away from your mom. I know what you mean about her bringing home snacks and all that. My mom has always done the same thing. Everyone keeps saying don't eat it then. I wonder if they know how hard that is. I've learned that if I see it I'll eat. Not because I'm hungry but just because it's there. So I try and practice the out of sight-out of mind thing. When my mom buys snacks they all go in a certain cabinet and tend to avoid that cabinet. If I don't see the food in there, I won't eat it. I have an overweight younger brother and two other skinny siblings. So my mom buys for them and not necessarily for healthy reasons. Sometimes I feel like no one cares but me, and it's hard to change your diet and eating habits without any support. So you may need to do what I did and find a fitness/diet buddy. I mean someone to encourage you to eat better and workout even when you don't want to. You should try sparkpeople.com
this isn't a promoting it or anything but i signed up and you can meet people who will help and encourage you to keep trying. good luck

Emily I am wondering how much you weight. This would help with answer. For starters your mum needs to understand that it is hard for you to have the junk in the house because you have no will power to not eat it. If she is not going to stop with the junk food you are going to have to get strong and stop eating it. Every time you want to eat something that is not good for you take it with you to the mirror. This should curve the temptation. You need to drink lot of water, give up real pop and the snacks. Pop alone you will loose 15lbs without doing anything else but just giving that item up. Eat in the morning, this will get your metabolism going so no matter what you do you will start burning fat. Cardio exercise is what you want. Walking, climbing stairs anything you can do to keep your body moving will do. As for exercising do before bed or when you wake up jumping jacks, sit ups and leg lifts or what ever you feel needs to be targeted. EAT right. Small plates of food,no more than a 6 in plate should be used when eating. 5 small meals a day with no snacking. Believe me if your eating 5 times a day you won't want the snacks. Fish, chicken and alot of veggies cooked or raw. Fruit apples tomatoes, oranges and bananas the list is endless. Give this a try for 2 mo. and see where you end up. You don't want to starve yourself this will make you gain more weght. Your body will go into a starvation mode and everything will stick to you. Our bodies do this for self preservation with out us even telling too. This is where many people make their mistakes. I think this is enough to get you on your way to a healthy weight. Drink more water. Good Luck!!!!!

Just cuz your mom brings home junk food does not mean you have to eat it???? Working out and eating right is the best way to loose weight. We all know that. But with some body types it is not going to matter. I have the problem with wanting to be bigger. My body type is for thin and all through high school I could not gain any weight. So everyday I worked out and ate a lot but still was always 175lb. Now that I am older and able to hold a few lb's and I am 188 all in the right places.

My point is that with your body type it is going to be extremly hard to maintain a decient weight. Eat right and work out and you will be as good as its going to get by age 18-23 as long as you work out 5 days a week doing each muscle. But when you work out do the exercises the right way. If you dont know what that is then ask a personal trainer.

Ok for one how much do you weight, its hard at 16because so many peoeple think they are fat and they arent.

But either way, it has to be a priority in your life, it cant be 3rd on the list, since you are 16 maybe you can afford to quit your job ? and spend time at the gym, and eat healthy. You dont have to eat what your parents bring home, i know its hard, but if your commited to it, it is possible.

What about getting invovled in sports? of course if your are significantly overweight that is probably not an option.

I suggest having a conversation withyour parents with a doctor present so that they can see the seriousness of the problem, if it truly is a problem and then help you.

I lost 105 pounds in 6 months. Here is how I did it.
1. Every morning get up and walk for 45 minutes. You can start with less time, but you want to get up to 45 minutes, and it must be fast walk. You want your heart rate to go up. It must be in the morning, it kick starts your metabolism.
2. I cut out Red Meat, and fatty foods. Boneless skinnless chicken breast, baked, or grilled, rice and vegetables (steamed).
3. Eat half. Just eat half of what you normally eat. Put 1/2 on your plate, and put the rest away. Cook less. When you go to fast food, get salads only. Or grilled chicken. No fries, only diet soda. Or water.

It will work, once you get into a routine, you will get hooked on the results, and you will keep the routine. It has been over a year for me.

Also start counting your calories. Write them down. You would be amazed as to how much more aware you are of your caloric intake, if you actually write it down. We recently discovered a site that offers a great program that counts calories, as well as keeps track of everything. It allows multiple users, so everyone in the family can keep track. They offer a free 7 day trial, and so far I am very impressed with the product. Try the 7 days and see. It allows you to add the exercise that you do during the day, which increases the amount of calories you can take in. Very Cool!!

Stay motivated, and get up and walk every day. I seriously lost all my weight starting off my day on my walk.

Good LUCK!

You haven't said how overweight you are....

It is unfortunate that your Mom keeps bringing home the stuff you don't want to eat....but it just takes some willpower to refuse to eat it. The other thing is...you can have a very small piece at the end of a meal to satisfy your sweet cravings.

A hint - don't eat after 7:00 at night. Stop drinking all soda's, white bread (including bagels), snack foods and drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. The water flushes your body and helps food to digest properly.

i think you should talk to your mum. Tell her how u feel. Also maybe go on a diet... a balanced diet.Go and run around a bit every morning or go to the gym! I think its still ok to eat cakes and stuff but not too much. But also eat alot of fruit and veg. Dont eat too much junk. The main thing is..as long as your eating healthy food and excersising regularly,u should start to loose weight. Anyway good luck and i hope i helped. :) xx

You need to get away from your mother.

Stop eating the cake.

If she forces you, make a big scene like you are choking on it. Run out the door, spitting it out.

Watch your calories, Go with 1800 a day, and exercise, and you will lose weight. It's simple chemistry.

Consider getting yourself emancipated, getting a job, and apartment of your own. Don't let her mistreat you, it is your life.

Once you have diabetes you are well and truly screwed. Tired all the time, mood swings, no energy, restricted diet, bad skin, open sores, amputations, kidney problems, blindness.

No Bullshit. Take charge or you won't see 50.
