I would advise that you visit your dentist for two reasosns, the first being that the dentist can prescribe and the second being that antibiotics are not usually the best course of treatment.
Unless you actually have a temperature then some other sort of treatment may well be better indicated.
A course of antibiotics may relieve the symptoms but the cause will still be there and require treated.

Yes if you have a problem with your teeth or gums your doctor would tell you to go to the dentist anyway. They each have their own prescription pads and the doctor's is medical and the dentists is for dental infections. I hope that you are registered with a dentist cos you may have trouble getting to see one otherwise, but if not then there are emergency dental surgerys around that you can contact. Good luck

Doctors, quite rightly get unhappy when they are asked to issue prescriptions for dental problems. This happens for 2 reasons, the first is that like you, patients do not realise that these should be given by dentists. The second reason is even more annoying, dentists try to offload their prescribing costs onto GPs.
In fact it is unwise of doctors to agree to deal with and prescribe for dental issues, because they do not have any dental training and may well be at risk of taking inappropriate action.
Under normal circumstances dentists SHOULD supply all prescriptions for dental problems.

Yes, although when I worked for a dentist, they aren't able to give as long a course of antibiotics as a doc..but they do know what they are doing..it is part of their training. It sounds like you have an abcess..if this is right, and the rules haven't changed..the dentist will give you a script and you will have to complete the course and return for treatment. You might be advised to salt wash your mouth as well..to help disperse the infection from your mouth. If you don't have an appointment yet...start doing that..as it will help.

I do not know about the UK specifically, but dentists anywhere are considered doctors and do prescribe medications just like any other doctors would

Yes dentists can prescribe and if I remember rightly the prescriptions are pale yellow instead of white paper. Go as soon as possible and get sorted. Good Luck.
