Why bother to feel sorry for somebody who is shy? There are a lot of people who are far worse off than those afflicted with shyness.

I do. I've been described as shy all my life. Recently, at the age of 25, I was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. I know shyness has different levels, but for those who aren't shy, let me try to describe how it CAN make you feel, as you may have a difficult time understanding how crippling it is... Somebody, anybody, asks you something--lets say a stranger on the street asks you for directions: All of a sudden, your heart races like you just sprinted 3 miles while drinking 10 cups of coffee, you feel like you are standing in a sauna with your ears ringing like you just walked out of a hard rock concert, your stomach feels like you have a vodka hangover from the night before, your hands and legs shake like you spent the day lifting weights, waves of hot and cold move through your body as if you had a fever, your eyes seem dilated, your head feels cloudy like you're on some drowsy alergy medication, and your mouth is parched like you haven't drank anything in 3 days. Now, because you are in public, you must pretend everything is fine...you must answer the person without making it obvious how they've made you feel. You mumble something, unable to hear yourself talk, only aware that your mouth is moving and that it looks stupid. As soon as they are gone, you feel this terrible feeling in your chest...you are certain you said something wrong...you can't even remember half of what you said. Your body's symptoms had made it impossible to focus and they were completely out of your control. Now, imagine this happens every time you come into contact with your boss, a professor, or anyone you don't know all that well. Imagine holding down a job, attending school, starting a relationship, trying to make friends, etc. ...Of course I feel sorry for shy people.

Yes, I feel terribly sorry for shy people. I was one in junior high, and all my friends were really outgoing and they kept telling me just to do something weird. But what could I do? Eventually, I came out of my shell. Now I'm not extremely outgoing, but I'm definately not shy. I think after a while everyone looses at least a little bit of shyness.

yes, i do. it seems that the only ones that does feel sorry is those that are in or have been there, and yes i am one of those. imagine being shy, but wanting your children to be outgoing so you put your best face on out there and try to teach your children there's no reason to be afraid. all the while feeling terrified yourself. i'm the youngest of 10 children and everyone else always seems so outgoing to me and i wonder why i don't feel the same.

Well sometimes I will ask myself why am I different from them? We are of the same age and yet one is a extrovert and the other is a introvert. People feel shy because they are afraid of crowds and unfamiliar faces. They are afraid of being laughed at when they make a mistake.
