FYI, the humane society doesn't kill animals anymore. At least mine doesn't.

We sold 1000 tickets for five dollars each. Each ticket got you five chances (one drawing a month for five months) to win a gift card for $500 dollars (to a place of their choosing) so we spent 2500 on prizes and brought in 2500 dollars.
We have a chinese auction, but that really takes a lot of work to make it nice. If you do this, my suggestions are 1) start early at least two months ahead of time 2) do not think "big companies" will automatically give to you, most have their budget set for charitible causes, small indivdually owned places are better. 3) try to get a local florist to wrap the baskets for you. You get the baskets (usually half price day at good will, or people you know) have the florist keep a tab of how much she uses for cellophane, ribbon,, ect,, give her the stuff in bags already seperated in to themes, and have her wrap them, it looks SO much better when a professional does it, you will raise more money!
Another good one is to find out when your local mall is having an event. If it is around a holiday, get a small booth and sell choclate flowers, or whatever. You could also work with the florist again, pay her a little over her wholesale cost.
In Scouts I always tried to make sure the boys were involved in making some money to help pay for their camp. We did bake sales, car washes, snack set up at local events,, things of that nature.
do a google search for Unusual fundraisers and you can get some more great ideas.

arrange to purchase gasoline at wholesale through a local station. Sell tickets for $5.00 each. Have drawing. Winner gets $500 of gasoline from the pump. Profits to your club. Difference between wholesale and retail goes to station as a charitable donation. Win-Win, and for the lucky winner, WIN.
