York or Edinburgh are great for weekend breaks and if you were wanting to travel by train (to see all of the scenary or to have a few drinks en route) tickets are really cheap at the moment for both.

They're both historical based towns which gives loads of great oppertunities for sightseeing but have loads of great restaurants and bars to visit.
I'm not too confident saying that there will be no pillocks around (you get them everywhere dont you!) but whenever I've been I've had a wonderful break away.

Check out the official tourist pages for places to go, stay or eat and things to see:

Hope this has helped and you have a great time wherever you choose!

Lake District is a real chill out place with nice restaurants etc. Try Bowness or Ambleside.

Portsmouth. There is a Premier travell inn that overlooks the harbour and if you get a room at the back you can watch the ferries etc. Also at Gunwharf quays which is about a 10 minuite walk there is lots of restaraunts and bars and also lots of nice shops where you can spend your husband's money in the daytime!! Seriously me and my hubby went there for a night and half a day while our kids were at Nanny's and it was lovely.

I recommend buying the lonely planet guide to britain, as it shows you the uk as a new country and you can approach it like you would when you go on holiday. then whenever you have even a day free it can suggest stuff in the area you never even knew about. Would have loved to have helped more but you need to say where you are in Britain as there's no point in saying the Isle of Wight if you're in Scotland...

Maybe a nice romantic hotel in Bath? They have some great places with 4 poster beds and private jacuzzis!

Why dont you try Whitby in North Yorkshire. Its real quaint, like York but by the sea.
