I have 4 guests coming for lunch and then to watch the rugby; 2 are then staying for dinner too. Any ideas what I should cook? I'm a fairly experienced and confident cook so would like to do something fairly challenging for dinner. I'd also like to do something interesting for lunch other than cold meats, salad, cheeses etc. Any ideas?

I forgot to mention that the lunch guests are the dreaded in-laws who are real foodies and not easy to impress! Also for lunch are my brother in law and his girlfriend who are then staying for dinner. This basically means that I will need to do as much of the dinner prep as possible early in the day, as a lot of booze may be consumed later on!

I think two meals that you can prep in advance are the answer here.

For lunch i would provide a posh lasagna or pasta bake dish, with salad and nice bread. Prepare the day before and then chuck in the oven. I really like Delia smiths Spinach and Ricotta Lasagna, http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/spinach-and-ricotta-lasagne-with-pine-nuts,1164,RC.html , serve this with a lovely tomato salad and some focaccia bread.

For the evening you could also do something in one pan, prepare ahead. I would go for a lovely stew or curry, that is easy to heat up and serve. On my website are two interesting curry recipes, a pork tagine style curry and also a Moroccan chicken curry which has harissa in it. You can serve these with preserved lemon couscous, or plain rice. The cous cous is lovely though, just make up your couscous as usual, but stir in two chopped preserved lemons and lots of coriander and mint.

I find that if booze is to be a major part of the day, its best to get as much done as possible the day before, and not all dishes stand up to storage overnight.

Good luck!

How about something involving pasta, salad and bread for lunch? Quick and easy so you wouldn't need to miss the rugby... Otherwise Greek meze or Spanish tapas... Ensure you've got beer for during the match! How about a roast of some kind with all the trimmings for the evening - you can stick it all in the oven and leave it to do its thing while spending the time with your guests? I like butternut squash with panchetta (or bacon chops) and also roast some leeks, carrots and sweet potatoes along with it and add cherry on the vine tomatoes too. Season with sage and, if you've got them, add chestnuts (this is a Jamie Oliver and Sainsbury's recipe I've slightly adapted). Good luck and enjoy!

I would do a casserole. Make it the day before and then just reheat it when needed. It will be all the better for being made in advance. Serve it with mash or a decent hunk of crusty bed if you are too squiffy. A nice chocolate pudding from the supermarket should make the meal impressive enough. Sod slaving away in the kitchen when everybody else is enjoying themselves.

fire up the barbie --- unless you are a kiwi --- therefore you need to fire up a hangi . --- blokes ( and indeed shelias ) are easily pleased when their attention is on the footy --- i wouldn't stress to much on what to dish up --- so long as there is plenty of grog to wash it down --- anything goes . good luck
