First and foremost, this wouldn't be a wise thing to do with any firearm. If it WAS done, the firearm would have to be completely submerged and all air in the gun's barrel released. If there was a pocket of air in the barrel pressure changes could rupture the barrel, damage the bolt and/or action as well as possibly injure the shooter. Any long barreled firearm would be more likely to suffer damage then shorter pistols. Shotguns would be the most vulnerable to barrel/action/bolt damage. A semi-auto firearm would not cycle another round into the chamber unless the gun was specifically designed to be shot underwater, and would not able to be safely shot out of the water if it was. Also, the effective range of your projectile would be very, very short. The military does have a 9mm that is designed for this purpose, but it's use is very limited.
In other words, a firearm WILL fire under water but it's a dangerous thing to do which could have catastrophic effects on both the firearm and shooter.

Yes, when our dept switched over to Glocks we watched a video from the sales rep where the navy seals I believe were doing the testing, I don't remember if it was a model 17 or the 18 (18 is a lot heavier built and has a heavier barrel due to its select fire capability) and the gun was stock with the exception of the lower weight recoil spring to insure feeding. There is a shooter side effect though, if submerged when the gun is fired it can lead to a concussion and you will have blood in your urinary track... Think about about that before you try this.

Yes it will fire under water,On Myth Busters they
tested several different weapons from a 9mm
pistol, a 308 rifle,44magnum and something else
but it was real powerful..The distance varies from
10 feet to 15 feet with only enough power at a
short distance to inflect serious damage..

Other episodes they covered shooting different
weapons into water and measuring how far they
travel under water..They furthest a bullet would
travel would be 10-15 feet and that was shot
from a standard rifle, they then tested a really
high powered rifle and once it had hit the water
the bullet disintegrated into small fragments
at a depth of 7 feet..

So if someone is shooting at you and there's a
pool near by, jump in it might just save your life..
Check out the Episodes at you local video store
there funny and informative..!!

Yes, a gun will discharge a bullet while submerged.
A 9mm or .357 magnum would be lethal at 2ft.

The ammo itself is waterproof. But that plug of water that's in the barrel of an immersed weapon would make for interesting chamber pressures though. The slug would be moving so slow and through such a very thick medium, that effectiveness of the bullet would be quickly diminished.

Like Dca200... suggested, in spite of if the gun survived, the bullet couldn't bypass any the position. Mythbusters also did this and positioned that guns fired INTO water went like a million-3 feet, would not be deadly, and severe cal like .50 basically shattered.

short answer yes the long answer is that the powder and primer must stay dry and even if the bullets are crappy they will still be good for a few hours if left in the water If your trying to shoot something under water or shoot into water you are going to want to stay away from high speed light bullets you are going to want lower speed super heavy bullets and absolutely no hollow points think of water like ballistic gelatin except 1 foot of gelatin=2 feet of water

Yes, but don't do it! This can be very dangerous, especially if you are submerged too. The force of the bullet sends waves through the water, which can harmful to you.

Also, never shoot at a body of water as the bullet can deflect and richocet.

Yes! I shot a 410 caliber shotgun under water one time just to see if it would fire.

yes because the power is inside a case which stopps it from getting wet and the firing pin will still move in the water to set primer off
