I wouldn't use a pellet gun because the pellet is so small compared to the rabbit that you would have to have a perfect heart or head shot in order to kill it without wounding it.
A .22 will get the job done! The .22 was made for hunting rabbits, squirells, and other varmin. If you live in a somewhat populated area then you could use a .22 short. A .22 short will work on most if not all .22 Long Rifles. It isn't as loud as a regular .22 bullet, and it doesn't travel as far as a regular .22 bullet. With the .22 if you got a bad shot you would defietly slow the rabbit down enough so you could give it a finishing blow.
Lets say that you don't have a .22, then what? Well you could save up about $200-400 and get either a .22 rifle or a .22 pistol. And the pistol works just as good as the rifle. But may not be as accurate due to the length of the barrel.
The gist of this is that if you are a true hunter that respects all of Gods creatures then you will get the .22 and just get your rabbit with a nice, clean, painless, kill.
And for more infomation about the .22 then follow this link.

I don't know the answer, but just ignore all those people who are having a go at you. They don't know the circumstances, you could be getting paid by someone with land that is being ripped up by rabbits, or it could be your own land that is being destroyed. The population has to be kept down sometimes and shooting if done properly is a good way of dealing with that. Rabbit holes can cause injury to horses when they trip on them and hurt there ankles, causing big vets bills, and people's land can be totally wrecked if there are too many rabbitts on it, they eat the plants and vegetables people grow and make lots of holes. Please don't judge people when you don't know the facts. I am an animal lover and rabbitts are lovely, but if no one shot them there would be far too many of them.I hope that you get your answer from some one sensible.

Did many, Many Time's Used a Crossman Air Rife, Pumped it 10X. Was around 1,000 FPS. Used B.B.'s & some time's Pointed Dart's.
Shot Rabbit's, Pigon's & a few Squrrel's.
.177 Caliber. Was around 50 Ft. away.
Didn't like the .22 Caliber Air Rifle

BEST way i have found so far is to go out at night with a lamp.....take a friend if you have to.
When you spot one, keep the beam on it, walk up to it very quietly, try and get within 30 yards. AIM just below the ears/behind the eye, and squeeze the trigger! you should get about 15-20 rabbits in a 2 hour session.
Use a .22, to get the job done.
have fun.

.22 calibre. and always aim for the head just behind the eye. this will ensure a clean and instantaneous kill. clean shots can be taken out to 35 metres but you should only shoot to ranges where your cabable of hitting a 2 inch circle every time. anything over 35 metres and your putting strain on your accuracy then you may maim the rabbit and not kill it. which is definately not sporting and gives your animal rights muppets ammunition against our sports.

For rabbits a 22. more stopping power than a 177. which would go straight through use flat heads, go for head or upper body shots at about 45 yards. Rabbits are vermin and it is government legislation that the landowner or local authority is obliged to keep control of rabbit population and Grey squirrels use the same on these as well.177. are best for birds, (pigeons upper body through the side or head shot) and are more accurate.
A good Quality air rifle with 10 to 12 foot per LB is very affective against rabbits

make sure you have an air rifle .17 or .22 pellets not a BB gun
aim is crucial if you don't hit in exactly the right spot it will only hurt it because there is not much power behind the shot I would suggest at least a thousand fps

800 fps to 1250 fps in .177 caliber. You can reliably kill rabbits to 50 yards with well-placed head and ribcage shots.
