The definition of constipation, as far as I remember, is having less than 2-3 bowel movements per week, although it varies from person to person. Chronic constipation is defined by the repetitive occurrence of stipsis.

You have to keep in mind, though that constipation is a symptom, not a disease, and can reflect a vast array of problems, from inadequate fiber intake to colonic motility dysfunction.

When an occlusion occurs, you should expect other symptoms, such as

Abdominal swelling
Severe abdominal cramps
Intermittent abdominal cramps
Vomiting

And less frequently:
Green vomit
Fecal vomiting - vomit that looks like feces
Blood-stained mucus passed
Passing jelly-like mucus

if you don´t have any of these manifestations, I would not worry tto much, yet, but it is a good idea to see a GP, and maybe be referred to a Gastroenterologist.

My experience is with children. A fecal impaction exists when stool will no longer pass thru the anus. Higher up in the colon, the more liquid stool will channel around the hard fecal mass and come out the anus in liquid form. This is called overflow incontinence.

I am leery of giving laxatives at this stage, fearing that it would cause great distress. The fecal mass might have to be disloged or softened by a lubricated gloved finger, then an enema is given. A single saline, tap water, or phosphate enema can be administered to an older child or adult, but younger children should be given enemas with a doctor's supervision, especially if repeated enemas are necessary.

Once the impaction is relieved, great attention must be given to diet and stooling habits, since recurrences are very common. There are newer laxatives and stool softeners on the market that I am not familiar with. Check with your personal physician.

Fecal impaction is almost never seen in otherwise healthy patients. Bedfast invalids and paraplegics are most often affected. A normal person can go without defecating for several days without an impaction. A mild laxative or suppository takes care of this type.
