The short version:
Buddhists follow the philosophy that life is inherently filled with suffering, and only by doing away with negative thoughts and desires can one be truly happy and at peace.
There is no form of "worship". They have no supreme being. The Buddha is treated as a wise teacher, and is honored, not prayed to (think of it as aspiring to be like).
There is a spiritual side to the philosophy, dealing with reincarnation, and energy; however, this is where I break from their teachings.

Buddhism has been described as a very pragmatic religion. It does not indulge in metaphysical speculation about first causes; there is no theology, no worship of a deity.
Buddhism takes a very straightforward look at our human condition; nothing is based on wishful thinking, at all. Everything that the Buddha taught was based on his own observation of the way things are. Everything that he taught can be verified by our own observation of the way things are.

It's not a conventional religion-it has no theology or belief in God- but a system of practical philosophy based on adhering to a set of moral precepts and attaining spiritual enlightenment.

Go to the library and get any of the books by the Dali Lama.
They are all good and they are easy to read and understand.
He is a great blessing and his words can bring you peace if you let them.
