for example, some christians will support carbon dating tests on things like the gnostic gospels, but refute it when it comes to other things, like prehistoric remains?

It's easier to dispute the validity of carbon dating than to admit that your holy book might just be the work of men, and not written by the hand of God after all. That would shake their faith something fierce, as they have been taught not to question. This train of thought seems to belong to the Creationists.

There are some Christians who believe that God was created with, or himself created, the big bang, and they are much more willing to accept that dinosaurs lived 165 million years ago, and that man is a product of evolution. They're the ones who are capable of logical thought.

Perhaps it is because of the half-life of carbon-14. Since it is 5,700 years, it is only reliable for dating objects up to about 60,000 years old. Anything older than that and . . . well . . .

So such things as gnostic gospels are only a few thousand years old. But prehistoric remains?

For the same reason that they pick and choose which parts of the bible to "believe" in and which to not. Whatever is convenient and makes them feel good.

You need to be very careful to only accept what supports your particular version of the religious popular fantasy.

You need to be careful, you know how fragile a fantasy can be.
