Hi,

My dad adopted a greyhound, he is great with people, lovong friendly, awesome. But other dogs are another story, if one comes up to him he growls and snaps. When we got him he wasn't like this. It's also ONLY if they coome up from behind him. Anyone else ever expereince this with their greyhound?

They are very competitive dogs and are trained to not like one coming up from behind while racing. This just seems to be the way they are so I'm thinking it will be almost impossible to train it out of him. However, it sounds like he is still going to be a good companion dog to humans. It's wonderful that your dad is giving him a good home. Good Luck and God Bless

First of all- good for your dad adopting a Greyhound! They are wonderful dogs. My parents had a retired racer and she was a bit like that in the beginning but after she realized she was no longer competing she stopped being so freaked out. Greyhounds compete for EVERYTHING when they are in circut. Including food. Keep exposing the dog to others (as long as there is no danger) and encourage and reassure that the other dog is not a threat.
Also another thought, you say its when dogs come up from behind- could there be a sight or hearing problem causing fright when somebody "suprises" the dog?
Just some thoughts....

I no longer own a greyhound owner, but I know that if the dog is not good around other dogs it needs exposure. Try taking the dog to a dog park and get it familiar with other senses. It might take a while but any chance you have to let your greyhound become familiar and aquanted with other dogs of all breeds, eventually it will become acustom to them. Give it time and do everything you can to get as much exposure as you can. Good luck.

Only thing I can say is be careful with him around other dogs. I have 2 family members that have adopted retired greyhounds. My mother in law's ended up tearing up her old senile blind sharpei as well as jumping up and grabbing her bird and killing it. Also sister and law's just killed her chihuahua. They are the sweetest dogs but some dogs will never be good with other dogs simply due to the way they are raised. Don't push it and risk another animals life.

Greyhounds do not like to be bothered when they are lying down.Do you have a nice soft pillow/bed for him/her?
The Greyhound is telling other dogs that he is boss. They will figure out the pack.Let him.her adjust.Good Luck I Love those Greys, had a few retired racers in my time.

Your dad is great for saving his life. They are so miss used. I bet that he probably just wants to be the top dog for once in his life. Maybe he doesn't want to share anymore. He wants to be the winner all the time in his great new life. Can correct this behavior so it doesn't get worse, but not too harshly. Ya don't say how long you have had him. I think he will calm down once he feels totally secure in his new home. Allow him some leeway with this. Be patient.

If he's a retired racer, he's used to competing. He'll calm down. Well done to your dad for saving him from a cruel death.
