I have £12k- would this do it (bearing in mind tax and a first tank of fuel etc etc). I don't neccessarily want a turbo, maybe an SC.

Would £12k do it?

My mate sold his 3.2 Carrera 1984 on a 'C' for about £10k last year. For £12k you should get a decent car, be careful though, there's a lot of rubbish out there.
Don't buy anything that's been modified, even if that is only a set of non standard wheels, it needs to be as original as possible, with all service and ownership history.

12K no problem. Get a 3.0 SC with 5 spd box. Check all the cables to the heater are not seized. Check that the heater gets hot. Insurance dead cheap from Carole Nash especially if yr in Porsche owners club. Clutches always heavy. Front boot gas rams always broken. Check rot around fuel filler, headlights, sills and floor. Check for blue smoke at tickover and under heavy acceleration. Full service history pretty useless at this age. Check milages against recent mot's. Have it HPI'd.
Look at importing one from somewhere hot - dead easy to convert to RHD.

what is an 80s 911? a car? if so, what make?

Okay, I'm there now, porsche 911 ...........

If you go here:-

http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_search.jsp?page=0&nU=0&make=PORSCHE&model=911&min_pr=&max_pr=&postcode=pl177pw&miles=40&max_records=200&modelexact=1&photo=1&hassearched=Y

and put in your postcode, it will show you local 911's for sale. There's only one 80s in my area and that's £10,000. So I'm guessing that you're £12,000 will get you a good one.

Happy hunting
.
One more thing ...... depending on your age, you'll probably need a hefty few quid for insurance, so make sure you look all this up before commiting to a sale

you can get a miod to late 80's car for around 9K but always check the history of the vehicle a hpi check is worth the money every time, also take a fridge magnet with you nothing to powerful and check the sills for filler this was the weak point of the 911 and i have seen lots of vehicles that look ok but when you check the sills there just full of filler, if you require any advice just mail me more than happy to help
