We have a 3 year old male Dobie that runs...EVERYWHERE! There are 2 small flights of stairs when you first come into our house & if he's coming in, you better get outta the way...he'll run right into you. What sort of training could we start doing with him to try & break him of this? He gets lost of exercise outside with our Border Collie, but still comes inside like a bullet. And not just upstairs, but also through doorways, I have been pushed against a wall for him to get through first. We have a 6 mth old that will soon be crawling around & I'm hoping that he will still be able to come inside, but I really need some suggestions as to what to do. About the only time he is an angel is when his choke collar is around his neck & on his leash, but I don't have the time to walk him everywhere in the house. If anyone else has had Dobies, is this something typical of the breed, will he grow out of it at a certain age? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have owned dobermans for 18 years.
They are very active and love to run.
You will need to work on training with them that the behavior in the house is not acceptable and you are not going to tolerate it.
They can be taught to come in nicely and not tear around.
I have a 4 year old now who thinks the house and the yard is the indy speeway. He loves to run thru the house and launch himself off my bed.
Work your dog on the lead comming and going from the house and let him know running is not ok in the house.
With time and effort on your part he should get better.
As for claming down I had a 10 year old female who ran hard like that up until about a week before she died.

Omg! Yes, dobies are sooo hyper active when coming in from outside...My parents have 2 of them...They are both sisters from the same litter. So you can imagine trying to raise 2 starting at 8 weeks...Lol. They are both a little over a year old now...And they are crazy...Lol. You let 'em in from outside..And you better watch out...They come running in as if something scary was chasing them...Lol. They will run laps around the house for hours. My parents just recently started training them to stay off the couch, because when coming in the house they would take a running leap and jump on the couch...Needless to say, the couch ended up breaking and now there is another one on the the way...But, they are doing great with staying off the furniture...They have their own doggie beds that stay in the living room for them to lounge on...They will push into anything to get it to move out of the way...We had this one about 10+ years ago...and I was just a kid...We had this wooden swing set that was very stury...Well, one day, he was running through the yard and ran right into the wooden supports to try to move it out of the way....Well, it didn't move...he ended up doing a somersault in the yard...It was funny! He was fine tho...Didn't hurt him at all...But, after that, he hasn't done anything like that anymore! But, my parents dobies will try to run underneath our legs and knock us to the ground...Lol...They have stopped doing it tho. They should calm down in another couple of years...Yours should have already calmed down...But, he will soon...Dobies just LOVE to run...
