I've been a TV tech since 1979. Sony has been around the entire time, constantly improving, refining, and staying at the cutting edge of technology. It's a solid product. Samsung, on the other hand, is more of an upstart company. They do a pretty good job, but they are no match for Sony. After doing some homework, I decided that the Bravia was for me and bought one last July. I love it

Firstly, which Samsung TV are you talking about? The Samsung Bordeux is technically equal to the Bravia, but the Bravia is actually better. BUT, the new Samsung Moselle has true HD (1080p) While the others, including Bravia have only 720p or 1080i. So, the Full True HD Moselle is better than the Bravia, but the rest of the Samsungs are not as good.

If you're only going to watch HD channels and/or Blu-ray discs, then Samsung is just as nice for less money. However, if you want to occasionally tune into an SD digital channel, then Sony is the only choice. The Samsung will blur regular cable channels all over the screen and you'll be embarrassed to show it to anyone while watching "normal" TV. Sony is not perfect either (no HDTV is when playing SD channels) but of all the makes and manufacturers out there, they have the best processing computer to handle it.
By all means, don't take my word for it. Visit a dealer and insist on seeing your choices ON A STANDARD CABLE CHANNEL (please don't let them fool you with there little HD show off feed - insist on a regular, non-HD channel).

Let me confess I do not know much about their relative merits. But Sony products I have not had much good experience with - music system gave problems, cell phone battery cover does not open (its too tight). I heard from other people that once you have a small problem with a Sony product, it never quite can be fully corrected.
