Yes and no; it's people not following the basic tenets of their religion who start wars. Christianity, for example, stresses loving thy neighbor as thyself, turning the other cheek, the meek shall inherit the earth, etc. If you follow those rules, war is not even an option. Probably the reason I don't follow any religion; sounds good in theory, in practice it falls very short of expectations.

Usually, but not always. Some eastern religions do not seem to have the same propensity for violence as their western counterparts, but I am not sure if this is a new phenomenon.
There's no getting around it; ancient religions (like Islam and Christianity) have sometimes been a driving force in the oppression of the masses, the denial of science, the destruction of individual liberties, and holding back civilization. Have you heard of the Library of Alexandria? Toasted. And "heretics?" Religion has killed more people than any other cause.
If you asked me, I think it's time to question war and religion, and all ideas perpetuated under the banner of faith.

No. Many of the wars that have happened had NOTHING to do with religion.

I believe a lot of wars are caused over religion. I don't think God likes religion.

It is not the religion that causes the war, it is the religious idiots on either side that do it. The same applies for todays society.

No.
Historians Charles Phillips and Alan Axelrod in their Encyclopedia of Wars (2004) analyzed 1,763 wars waged from circa 8000 BCE to 2003 CE. They determined only 123 wars were religious in nature and 66 of those were waged in the name of Islam, leaving, in the last 10,000 years, only 57 (3.23%) fought for all other religions combined. http://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-Wars-Volume-Library-History/dp/0816028516
