OMG. It makes me wanna bite somebody's face!! (Not really, you humorless Yahoo nazis).
It is so infuriating, especially being in a situation like you described, putting back that second package of meat because it's just not in the budget this week... I'm in CA and it's really bad here in some counties - I cannot figure out how they get away with it. I remember the hoops I had to jump through to get medi-cal benefits during my pregnancy, and never wanted to go through that for Welfare Aid. So I work my butt off, and watch other screw the system and teach their kids it's okay.
ADD: Curious, don't oversimplify. Of course it's possible that one of us would run into a person borrowing a nice car. But don't pretend that for each of us who have experienced the situation, each food-stamp user was wearing borrowed jewelry, a borrowed purse, borrowed designer clothes, a borrowed car, etc. That's quite improbable. The fact is, people do abuse the system, and it sucks to witness it first hand.

Ok, I am not rich or anything. However, I am not poor either. My sister is poor and when she had no job she was only getting food stamps, because she didn't have her kids. I would let her trade me food stamps for money to pay her bills. I can't afford to just give her money, so it's the only way I can help her out.
Also, disabled people get food stamps too. She could have been going to the store for someone else that can't go for themselves.
I see where you are coming from though, it is hard when you are working hard for a living and barely making it and you see other people waltzing through life getting everything handed to them. Don't get discouraged though. In the end, you will come out ahead of them.

i worked as a cashier at a grocery store for years and this kind of thing happens all the time. people with hundred dollar bills in their wallets paying with food stamps or arguing because something rang up 5 cents more than the tag on the shelf said.
i learned two things- 1) there are some people in this world who will abuse the system and get money from the goverment they dont need and 2) you dont know the persons situation. maybe the money in their wallet is to pay other bills, maybe the bag and jewelry are fake, the phone is pay as you go, and the lexus is used.

no, never happened to me.
some possibilities are
1. the diamond ring, gold chains, and LV were all knock offs and she borrowed the car to food shop.
2. maybe she has a sugar daddy
3. maybe her parents got her the stuff
4. maybe she saved the valuables from years ago, (i have jewlery from 5 years ago and sometimes it appears i have more than i really do have)
5.maybe she got those things at bargain prices throughout the years
6. maybe she is playing the system

Unfortunately Food Stamps are like anything else..if you don't need them, you can get them in a heart beat. The people like the woman you described play the system, and hide what money they do have. They lie on their applications and get away with it. It sickens me, especially when there are families who could really use the help.

I don't have a feeling on this point because the purse maybe a friend and the car may be borrowed you never know someone elses story, your on the outside looking in...
she could be going to the store for her grandmother and using her grandmother's foodstamp card.. it may not be her's....
Don't prejudge!

Food stamps, what the hell is she doing with food stamps? Is she so stingy that she wont pay cash. That is the epitome of being rich. there should be a law against that.

Yes-I have been there more than once, it is depressing especially if you have children, ruins my day. Makes me want to report them but, I don't know who they are to report them.
