Go to Homebase and there's a varnish called Diamond in a silver tin. That's the one to use.

You need a varnish or polyurethane made for floors. The more coats you use the longer it will last. The real trick is to get all the dust cleaned up before you start and between coats. It's time consuming, but a brush will give the best results. Foam pads and rollers leave air bubbles in varnish and polyurethane. Have a plan so you don't varnish yourself into a corner.

Dulux Diamond Glaze.
As long as you have removed all previous stains/varnishes/etc then water based Diamond glaze is the way forward!
However you may want to stain the broads a little before you seal them .
Again is you have removed all of the previous vanishes the a water based stain (liberon) allowed to dry for a few hours is the way forward!

I would suggest using a good quality Yacht Varnish, and build it up with 4 or 5 coats allowing full drying time as suggested on the tin.
