Idol worship is not wrong. And god is present in the idol.
As Krishna says in the Bhagavat Gita:-
O Arjuna! Only fools declare that the idol in a temple is made only of mud clay and stone and is devoid of Me. There eyes are blinded with ignorance and the know not the truth of the world. They claim the world is created under the mundane combination of matter and lust; and is godless. Those fools challenge the very existence of the soul.
Further he states:-
Arjuna! There is not a place where I am not present. In soil ,dust and even in the tiniest atom I am there. The entire world (Universe) moves under My control.

it would be misdirected worship
Jesus said the Father seeks people who worship in spirit and in truth. An idol, by definition, is a misrepresentation of God, which causes someone to worship not the real God but an imaginary God.
Idols do not need to be made of wood or stone, they could be mental. Basically they are wrond ideas about God that divert true worship
"This is eternal life that they might know you the onlytrue God and Jesus Christ who you have sent" John 17:3

Idol worship is wrong because Jehovah God condemns the practice. Principally because he exacts exclusive devotion, as shown above in the second of the Ten Commandments. Moreover, he said through his prophet Isaiah: “I am Jehovah. That is my name; and to no one else shall I give my own glory, neither my praise to graven images.” (Isaiah 42:8) At one time, idolatry ensnared the Israelites to such an extent that “they would sacrifice their sons and their daughters to demons.” (Psalm 106:36, 37) Idolaters not only deny that Jehovah is the true God but also serve the interests of his chief Adversary, Satan, together with the demons.

Deu 5:6 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of slavery in Egypt.
Deu 5:7 "Never have any other gods.
Deu 5:8 Never make your own carved idols or statues that represent any creature in the sky, on the earth, or in the water.
Deu 5:9 Never worship them or serve them, because I, the LORD your God, am a God who does not tolerate rivals. I punish children for their parents' sins to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.
Deu 5:10 But I show mercy to thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my commandments.

Because our Creator - God - said in the Law (10 Commandments) that 1) you will love God with all your heart and soul, and 2) you will not have any other gods before Him.

Because they have no imagination, my friend. That's what happens when you put a soul in a clay that has no poetry in it.

It is unjust because we were given life and existence by a being which is non-physical, God. He created us out of love and we too should love Him. If we worship sticks, stones and other objects, we are insulting the one who truly loves us and created us.

"The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak Not; eyes have they, but they see Not; They have ears, but they hear Not; neither is there any breath in their mouths. They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them." (Psalm 135:15-18)
"Ye shall make you No idols Nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God." (Leviticus 26:1)
"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:"
(Exodus 20:4)
"Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves... Lest ye Corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female..." (Deuteronomy 4:15-16)
