i have a 6 month old westie and i have noticed recently that his pinkish skin is turning a darkish brown/black is this normal as this is the first time i have owned a westie and dont no if i should be worried and take him to the vets, in himself he is a happy dog and no changes so is this normal or not?

Yes this is normal skin pigmentation for a maturing West Highland White Terrier. They usually will have greyish black skin under the coat as adults. He's normal don't worry.

As long as the skin isn't dry and cracked and crusty then this is normal. However, Westies are renowned for 'westie skin' so do keep an eye on your pup. Do not feed or give water out of plastic bowls, ceramic or metal only as plastic bowls have been known to cause skin problems in dogs. The chemicals in the plastic leach into the water and food.

Adult Westies have dark skin. Sounds like your pup is just maturing. I wouldn't worry unless there are problems like excessive dryness or itchiness.

She is just getting older. It is like how when your hair changes color when you get older.
