They are not a breed for the novice, needing firm handling & consistent training. Contact the Weimeraner club for informed advice:

As others have said, they are not a breed for the novice dog owner - they are extremely needy and high strung. You really need to do yourself and your girlfriend the favor of honestly assessing why you're looking specifically for a Weimaraner. If you're an especially active couple (i.e. can devote 2-4 hours *every day* to outdoor activities), then by all means: Weim away!

Check out WeimaranerWays.com - they have a pretty concise list of "about the breed" pages.

Why does your girlfriend want a Weimaraner? Does she hunt? Or does she just think they are pretty? They are a breed that requires an outlet for large amounts of energy. A quick walk in the park daily isn't going to cut it. Neither is apartment life. Weimaraners are 70-lb. dogs that will outsmart you and rule the roost if you do not take a firm hand with them. They know how much they can get away with, and will take a mile if handed an inch. They must respect their owner's judgement in all things, or they'll just make up their own mind and do whatever pleases them. They are a breed best left to those who can sport them on acreage after birds and beasts as gundogs and hunting companions and who have a lot of experience in handling large, strong dogs.

I have one he is a year old. They are not for a novice owner like the other have said they are very smart. They do need allot of exercise, I don't hunt or show he has plenty of run in the yard (must have fence or never stay home hunting instinct) When I get home from work we take a walk. He is great around small children but he has been around them since he was 7 weeks old. You must teach them early on that you are the leader. When they get about 6 moths old you may have things on the counter come up missing (steaks) They don't get along with cats or any thing small. They will let you know when someone is at your door.

They are a good breed not suffering with any major defects.I wouldn't recomend them to first time dog owners as they are very boistrous and need firm training. They make good guard dogs, but arn't aggresive by nature. There coat is short and fine and moulting will not be a big problem.

NNOOOO!!

My mother in law has one and it is the most bloody annoying dog - you can do nothing. She was no novice to having dogs, she grew up with all different breeds of dog and when her last labrador (an absolute dote) died, then her son bought her one of these dogs, 18months later Its still like having a baby!! Yes, he's house trained but it won't stay on it's own without making havoc, it has to get into bed with her and her husband because he gets so cold, she's even bought it the dog jackets, it NEVER stops barking - even at its own reflection! Very jealous of my daughter so wouldn't trust them near children either!
An absolute torture!!

Not unless you are a experienced dog owner. They are a handful and need lots of stimulation.

Go for it , but remember as with any dog you have to show you're top dog. A truly handsome dog.

Get a *****, not a dog.
Dogs are so totally willful!
Bitches are much more biddable.
They need loads of exercise.
They don't shed much hair.
Mine are so loyal and loving.
