The "test tone" answers you're getting are right on the mark...But even if all your speakers test, your changing "volume" problems might be many other things.

If you don't correctly configure your receiver's set-up menu, then the movies won't play back correctly...You can tell the receiver which speakers you have, where they are and how big they are.

Also, your receiver has INDIVIDUAL volume settings for each speaker...Changing these can affect the sound quality on your movies...Turning up the CENTER and REAR speakers can help out sometimes.

Lastly, the "DYNAMIC RANGE COMPRESSION" can make all the difference in the world...This option is in your receiver and your DVD player...When you turn it on, it shortens the distance in volume between the LOUDEST and the SOFTEST sounds.

Yes there is look for the test tone. If you hit that button or option it will send static to each speaker and if you hear something outta that then you know its not blown.

If you are having trouble sometimes it being quiet and or too loud then that reciever might have a smart sound set on it. Meaning that it will try to figure when things are going to be loud from the screen but often it robs you of good sound. Turn that off and enjoy.
