Jesus had twelve, but his instruction was for his disciples to go out and make disciples of others in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Those who took stand against romans and saved Jesus(pbuh), to be crucified, when Romans tried to crucified Jesus(pbuh).
Because true Follower should be able to take stand for Prophet, and should not care their own life.

Of course, the religious misogynists didn't bother to mention Jesus' female followers, such as Mary.
