Where can I find specific instructions on how to read coordinates? I get the coordinates to where I want to go in the world from Google Earth and add them to my GPS before I leave. How do you read them? Is it like in geometry class, rise over run? Thanks

No, if you want to think in math terms it's more of descartes system. 0 Latitude is the equator and 0 longitude runs through Greenwich England.
To understand degrees minutes and seconds. Remember this, the Earth makes a complete revolution every 24 hours. So 360 divided by 24 = 15 degress. Which means every 15 degrees is equal to one hour. Each hour is subdivided into 60 minutes and each minute, into seconds. So there are 24 rings running vertically ,like an orange section (longitude) around the earth and there are also 24 rings equally spaced running horizontally (lattitude) like rings on a ball .This means that each hour at the equator is approx 1037.58 miles. 1 minute is 17.293 miles and 1 sec is .288 miles or 1507 ft.

When you read GPS coordinates it's telling you how far both laterally and vertically you are from 0,0 (which is south of Ghana and west of Gabon in Africa).
