Neighbors have a lab, sweet old thing I must say. Today, after he went and followed me on my walk his owners came looking, then whipped the poor guy for not coming when called and traveling with the rest of the "pack." *side question, how can I tell them that's NOT a good thing to do?*

Anyways, while walking back the owner went off saying this dog was worth 2grand because he was trained an already neutered. Um... obedience training *all the way, not just a single set of classes* is prolly only $500, at the most, and neuter around here costs less than $50. I know these people, and I guaruntee the dog isn't registered with anything, and if it is they don't have proof.

Short of being a trained and registered seeing-eye or search and rescue dog *i don't think they'd place a retiree where the dog gets whipped, chained, and never taken on walks or let in the house* what makes a lab worth 2k?

The leash. He hit the poor dog three times with the leash. I'd love to report their retarded means of training, but if sent to the shelter he'll just find a home that just as bad, if not worse, and I couldn't take my neighbor's dog. That'd be a little wrong, ya know?

They got the dog free frm a relative.Trailer trash types don't have $2000 for anything, you know. Just to point out the obvious of that statement, living in a trailer doesn't make you trailer trash, and living in a house doesn't make you high-class.

But no, they go about "I paid X amount for that, or it's worth THIS MUCH"when most of their stuff is useless to them. Like a computor I think they have, yeah, worth three grand when it was originaly bought, but ten yearscan really hurt the value of a PC.

I rant only because the irritate me so with the way they treat their dogs. They've had a few in the last two years, ignore them mostly, then take 'em in the woods when they get "mean" due to lack of socialization and having been chained to a tree with only ten feet of chain to work with and a rusty steel drum to call a dog-house.

It is sad that he has to endure such a home, but I'll be he loves them anyway..
Naw, they didn't pay $2,000 for the dog, or they would care for it better..lol
However, you never want to argue such a statement, but just shine em on..and know that they are liars..
However, if they say that again, you might make a statement such as..WOW! I would have never guessed it, as you don't treat him as if he were worth anything! I think i would value such a valuable dog more..If I had given such a large amount, he would be treated as a king..( and just smile inside)

Just going through classes and neutering even if it ACTUALLY cost that much for the stuff does not mean the dog is worth that much money. A dog is not like a house where you make an improvement and then expect to get that value out again at resale. it just doesn't happen that way.

A way a lab might be worth $2000 is if the dog were showing and had a championship or better, if the dog had both a championship and a field or gun dog championship on the dog. Then a dog like that would be worth a nice sum as a stud dog.

Well, I'm a little more concerned about what you mean by whip. Do they plainly smack it or do they actually have something to whip it with?

I feel compelled to tell you that you should do something with the dog's situation. No creature should ever be chained for his entire life and not know anything beyond his reach or restrained to experience things outside his misery.

Try to talk with the dog's owners and offer to walk their dog when you have time. Tell them you are going on a short walk and would like a companion and you think their dog would love a stroll around the block. What I mean is to just help the dog get some exercise and give the dog something to look forward to from time to time. LoL. I don't mean it as you kidnapping the dog. If they refuse, if I were you, I'd search for someone who is capable of caring and loving the dog and tell them about the situation the dog is in.

Anyway, if the dog is truly abused, I would recommend calling the animal abuse hot line. If you report it, they reward you $100.

PS: I have visited several pet shelters. I volunteer 50% of my spare time. Some are awful, some are heavenly. Personally, I would check where they will take the dog and visit the shelter myself. Some pet shelters require potential adoptors to be evaluated by a home visitor, meaning the shelters want to make sure they have an adequate and a safe place for the pet they are trying to adopt. Also, here in San Diego (CA), some shelters train their pets and they provide full medical treatment to animals who need them. This is possible thanks to volunteer vets and donations.

If you think that the shelters at your area is not good enough, help the dog out by posting the dog's situation on: http://www.petfinder.com/ and hopefully, someone will find a legal way to take the dog and take care of it.

Either way, you are the only dog's chance of having another shot of enjoying life with a family that will care and love him. You know if the dog is being abused and if you need to call animal cruelty hotline. Loving families out there are looking for pets to give their time and attention to. Besides, I'm sure that your heart goes out to the lab. I'm sure you won't be able to resist to help the lab out of this sad situation any longer.

ok, so they paid 2k for a dog they won't let in the house, and they whip if it leaves their property with anyone but them?

If I paid 2k for a dog, I better not ever have to whip it!!!
