In the Old Testament, the priests were the "Middlemen" so to speak, between the people and God.

Jesus' death on the cross was a propitiation for our sins thereby enabling us a "direct" access to God because of Jesus' righteousness imputed onto us that would accept his gift by faith.

Hebrews 4:15-16
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

The priesthood is the power and authority of God. By his priesthood power the heavens and the earth were created. By this power the universe is kept in perfect order. Through this power he accomplishes his work and glory, which is "to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"
