It all depends on the character of the man and his perception of the woman, which is all overshadowed by the cultural context. You can attempt to alter his perception by how you present yourself, but you cannot change his character.

It all depends on the man...as some of the answers guys have left here show. (My girlfriend asked me out...we've been together just shy of two years now...)
I'm assuming you are considering asking someone...so consider this, it might be better to ask: What type of guy doesn't think less of a woman for asking him him out?
If the guy you are thinking of asking would think less of you for having asked...would you really want him to say yes? Probably not.

No, because it tells a guy that the woman is confident and decisive. She knows what she wants and doesn't want to sit back and wonder what-if or will he ... yada yada yada
