Back when the greek, norse, and egyptians practiced those beliefs, they were mainstream, so they were religion. Anything that isn't one of the big 5 (or is it 6?) religions is automatically a cult. And if it started out as a mainstream religion and became outdated, it's mythology.
Actually, there are still people who practice the ancient religions... they're called Pagans.
In logical terms, mythology is actually the set of stories and characters from a given religion. Christian mythology includes the characters and stories from the Bible, etc. but they don't like being called mythology because that somehow implies that they're fake. Somehow.

What is the difference? One is Myth and one is reality, have you ever read the book "Signature of God"? If not you really should. Not only does this book give you the mathematical chance / laws of probability/ of what the odds are that the prophecies that were predicted two to four thousand years ago and that all of them have come to pass or are in the clear sight of coming to pass. Did you know that two thousand years ago John told that there would be an army from the East that would speak of an army of two hundred million men? Do you know that China now boasts of this size of an army? Did you know that John prophesied that this army would march across the Euphrates river on dry land? And that the Turkey government has built the huge Ataturk Dam on the Euphrates River that has the capibility of stopping up the river down stream so no one has water for the first time in history? Hum... Do you see any thing that sounds like an army of two hundred million men marching across the Euphrates river on dry land. Are you aware that the Chinese government has a military super- highway that goes across Asia heading directly towards Israel. The highway has been completed through The south of China,Tibet, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. This highway is forbidden to be approached by foreign people. John said this in Revelation "The way of the kings of the east might be prepared" Revelation 16:12. Do you know that the chance of Christ fulfilling all of the prophecies that all of the prophets fortold? It is one chance in 480,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. That would be like if you dropped a diamond ring in one of the oceans of the earth, but you don't know which one, and then you have one chance to find your ring. Are those odds that you think that you can bet your salvation on? Daniel fortold in the 12th Chapter of Daniel, that knowledge would increase in the last days. Do you know that knowledge has basically been at a stand still for almost six thousand years, and only in the last one hundred years or so has knowledge started to increase. John also told about a mark being placed in the hand or forehead that would permit you to buy and sell in the last days. They now have chips that they plant in people in Flordia, that holds all of their medical information, this makes it easier to admit them into the hospital. They have chips that can hold all of our medical, dental, finanical, and all personal information. When this chip is removed from the hand or forehead, it will die. It is placed in the hand and forehead because of the skin being so thin there and it is easy for the computer to read the chip. Hum..How did John know about that two thousand years ago?? If you need more information about the Bible please feel free to contact me. Our God is NO MYTH!

Mythology does not mean something fake. It is a tale that tells human emotion, idealized history and secrets of human mind. Carl G. Jung was a psychologists who reevaluated the importance of myth in human life. Religions do the same.

Well, for one thing the stories are good and almost human. It is also the perception that separate mythology from religion.
For example, Wiccan can dismiss the bible as a myth as they do not believe it and felt it is a good bedtime story. Vice Visa for Christian.

In my opinion, religion is what people believe TODAY, such as Christianity, Catholicism, and so on. Maybe mythology is considered what people USED TO believe in. Either way, I personally don't believe in either. However, I found The Odyssey very entertaining.....
