Azureus itself is totally safe. Get it from Sourceforge.net
As to what ELSE you choose to download with it- it depends on what you want, and where you get it from. Movies? Music? Probably ok.
Applications? Be prepared- you may get bitten.

Yes,the downloads that come from torrents are actually safe.So far,I haven't received any virus alerts from the torrents I downloaded.Just make sure to check the comments section for more info if people found that the torrent has a virus.Also,pick torrents with high seeders,those torrents are usually(but not all the time) safe.
Also after downloading a torrent,run a virus scan of the file to check if it has a virus-just to be safe.
