You cannot make someone stop doing something if they don't want to stop. Period.

Most alcoholics have to hit rock bottom before they realize what they are doing.

Don't enable your friend. I assume that you spend a good amount of time together. Tell him that you aren't going to be around him if he is drunk or drinking. Occupy his time with other activities that will distract him from drinking - go to the gym, the mall, take a class, go to a movie - involve him in activities where he can't drink.

Talk to his other friends and family - find out if they are as concerned as you are. If they are, you all can hold an intervention for him and maybe help him to realize what he is doing to himself.

Seriously, don't try scare tactics with him - that will only push him away from you and further into the bottle. Offer to go with him to see a counselor or group support meeting.

Best of luck and I hope this helps!

Well first of all He must want to quit. Yes! it is addictive, but there is help. First of all prayer works, the next best thing is there is AA alcoholic anonymous, and many people are using the patch or the gum. I am not a guy, but I used to do both and did so for over 25 years then I received Jesus into my life and the desire for drinks left and a year later I called on the name of Jesus and was delivered from the cigarettes. That has now been 32 years ago. Also there are other natural means to help and if you care to contact me I will reveal more to you.
However our wills are very strong and if we make up our minds we are going to quit we can do it. Years ago my Father made up his mind he was quitting smoking and he did! He was smoking 3 packs of Buckinghams a day, so it is possible.

What is happening to your friend now is he is destroying both his liver and his lungs, so tell him that and see if he will listen. But I KNOW that when we like doing some things we justify our selves even at the risk that it is harmful, and we could die.
My email address is newbegin@shaw.ca send your entire email to me as I do get a lot of mail and I need to read the entire problem again.

as for drinking and smoking, there is nothing that you can really do. Yes it is and can be harmful to the child, her doctor will recommend that she stop, but there is nothing you can do. As for illegal drugs, in some states if a child is born on illegal drugs the mother loses all rights. But I new a girl in New Mexico that gave birth by emergency c-section, because she was six months along and her and the baby were addicted to crack. The state never stepped in and took the baby, and finally after 6 months in the hospital the baby was released to her.. talk about piss me off!! I was so mad, but like I said there is really nothing that you can do. Her doctor will do a drug screening, or should, but it is still her body and her choice. Kind of like an abortion I guess they figure scenes the baby cannot live on its own then it is the mothers choice.

First, I think you need to find out the reasons behind the bad habits, especially drinking. If its addiction, check him into a rehab. If he's troubled and needs the alcohol to numb or ease the problems, get him to realize that the drinking will never take away his problems or get him a shrink. You are right, you don't want him to get hurt. And he may hate you for what you are going to do, but he will thank you later in his life when he gets over this **** phrase of his life!!

As for smoking, the patches seem to work, as long as you go slowly(out here you can get free patches from a quit smoking line)

With drinking, there are serious withdrawals. The best thing to do is for him to go to AA meetings or rehab.

if there's a will then there's a way.
your friend needs a lot of discipline.
he should know about the consequences of drinking too much alcohol.
and the long term effects of smoking (it kills ya!)

maybe going to a rehab center will help.

do so before anything seriously bad happens to him
many people prefer to learn the hard way.

Like you said he is already very much addicted so let some specialists deal with him before it gets too late. I know he might refuse or think of it as an insult for you to insist him to go to rehab but if you really care bout him then you'l just have to take him.

My aunt just came out of reheb with the same problem but shes managing to deal with it head on with our support of course, but for her the drinking was affecting her work and social life. This one time i got home with guests and found her on the front porch dead drunk and fast asleep. So since you love your friend so much take him now and encourage him, beacuse i know it aint an easy thing.laters

why does he drink and smoke? why did he start? peer pressure or for the fun of it? if his parents doesnt know where does he get the booze from? you see there are many things you didnt mention in your question so with out any real info we can not help him. i suggest he visit an AA website and take it from there.

You can go camping, get him away from the alcohol for a while. Obviously, don't take any beer or anything with you. This will work for cigarettes as well.

You could sneak him some antabuse. It'll make him very sick if he drinks alcohol. Check it out.
