what does it mean when a guy asks you if you have plans for the weekend? is that hinting that they want to ask you out or just making small talk?

you never really know it could be either so if you want him to ask you to hang out then just say you dont have plans and dont say anything else if its just small talk then it will just be like whatever. if he wants to ask you out then this will give him the chance because he will know you are not busy

It really depends on the situation. It could mean either or.
Did the guy come out of no where and ask you?
Was he some random person?
Is he your friend?
You should ask yourself some of those questions. If he came out of no where and asked you but he's your friend, then he could be just making small talk. If he's some random person who came out of no where and asked, then he might be hinting that he wants to ask you out. If he's just a classmate that you kind of know, he could be curious, or he could want to ask you out.

Depends if its someone who has been flirting with you, yes he is hinting to take you out, if its someone you know is not interested, just friends then no, he just interested what you r plans are for the weekend.

He's feeling you out if he has a chance of getting a date with you. Its a hint and at the same time trying to determine he's not going to get himself embarassed if he ask you out.

If he asks you out just after, then you could consider it to have been a hint that he was about to ask you out.
If he doesn't ask you out, then it was just small talk.
