Perhaps it is the only lineage that can be traced back to the original teachings and practices of the Buddha 2,550 years ago.
Another reason for this is the preservance of the vinaya code and pali pitaka as handed down from the first Buddhist Council. This is vital for the survival of the Buddha sasana.

It is the Individual Liberation vehicle of Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The teachings associated with the Theravada are shared paths with the Mahayana. They are not discordant in any way with Mahayana teachings. The motivation is a little different between these and the teachings of the bodhisattva. Also, anyone who would posit that teachings of the Mahayana and Vajrayana are not traceable back to the Tathagata should examine the Four Seals.

I think you meant Theravada Buddhism. It is based on the smaller vehicle where it teaches the monk to bring themselves to enlightenment first before passing on their training, as in order not to misguide others.
About it's significance, well, Thailand and some other countries national religion is Theravada Buddhism.
Oh, by the way, Theravada Buddhism does not believes in any god of any form.
You might want to read about it on Wikipedia.
