This was how I learn mandarin, probably it help. I read chinese newspaper every day, try to finish all news. When come across a new word, write it down and check dictionary for the meaning and usuage.

(yes, I'm aware the accent marks on the pinyin romanization are missing. i'm lazy.)

But I can tell you that immersion is the best way to go about it. I'd recommend checking out eBay or something for some Chinese films, then watching them over and over until you can understand the entire script. Recite the lines with the actors as the movie plays, to make sure you can speak the words as well as understand them.

Pracitce them more with real Chinese teachers.
