are there ceratin features that give them this ability??

Plants and trees - no. However, some seeds (especially in Australia) need a fire to germinate.

Had a tree come down last fall in heavy wind. Went out to cut it up and found where it showed evidence of having survived a fire. There was what looked like charring on one half of the radius of the growth rings. Counting back from the bark it was 32 years ago now that there was a fire that scorched that tree. I figure it was that damage along with that wind we had last fall that brought down the tree.

plants and trees don't survive, but the seeds do, and the ash makes the soil more fertile for the new plants
