i have been assigned some homework on wort and mash, and i am not quite sure what there are.

Mashing is the process by which malted grains (most commonly barley) are used to convert their starches, and potentially the starches of any other grains used, into fermentable sugars. The addition of water and heat optimize the conversion action of the amylase enzymes found in malted grains.

Wort is the sweet liquid that is a mixture of water and the sugars converted by mashing. After the mashing, the grains are "sparged"...they're rinsed with warm water to extract all the possible sugars from the converted grain starches. The wort then has yeast added or "pitched" to begin the fermentation process...making the wort become beer.
