I have an Abcess that I'm currently taking medication for. Due to the medication doing it's thing, I've developped a small "lump" of what I assume is puss beginning to escape and it hurts. Would it be ok if I decided to take a needle to it and pierce the swell?

Keep taking the antibiotics and make sure you finish the course. Don't take a needle to it, but instead rinse the area with a cup of water as hot as you can stand with a teaspoon of salt stirred into it - this acts as a natural antiseptic. Do this three times daily. The abcess may burst on its own, particularly if you suck it when you rinse, so be prepared for a nasty taste!!!

Sometimes infection at the apex, or tip of the root of a tooth, becomes a bulbous swelling as infection makes its way out of the pulp of the tooth. You need to see your dentist again when you have finished the current course of antibiotics.

No it is not okay to pierce the abcess. It will drain all on it's own, and you won't chance introducing anything new. Plus, if it isn't ready to drain, you will just do more damage than good. The mouth can bleed quite a lot as well, and you wouldn't appreciate that at all. Rinse with a good mouthwash, brush your teeth and take your antibiotics, and then go back to the dentist for the rest of the treatment you need.

Peroxide works wonders. It comes in a brown bottle. Go to your local pharmacy and purchase a bottle. Dilute it one part water, one part peroxide and rinse your mouth out with it. If the gum is really infected you can saturate a clean cotton ball with the peroxide in its full strength and place it on the infected gum. When your mouth fills up with saliva, discard it. Do this about three times daily. It will hurt a little or a lot, but it works. I have taken a needle and pierced the abscess on some occasions, but it will hurt. But I've found that the peroxide has a better chance at working if the abscess is pierce. I've done this when I couldn't afford to go to the dentist.

No do not open it. If it opens on it's own that is fine but hopefully the antibiotic will take care of it.
