Suppress? I feel some guild in your tone...

Anyway, you can "suppress" your desires by becoming a very guilt-filled person, never able (or brave enough) to live with them and be a whole human being, or you can throw the **** morals out of your soul and try to gain understanding on what constitutes desire itself: it is wanting, of any kind. You can desire food if you are hungry, or you can desire to kill somebody because they bother you.

So the real point I wanna make here is: you should not need to supress your desires at all. You should simply CHOOSE which of your desires you are going to satisfy and wich ones you are not. In the end, is is a matter of free will. You choose who you want to be, and your desires will eventually acomotate to that idea of yourself.

Peace!

How desires arise? First of all there are thoughts and from thoughts desires and then action follows the desires. Suppressing desires means suppressing thoughts. If you try to suppress your thought it will strike with more fury. What is needed is " watch the thoughts as and when it arises" Do not follow the thoughts. Do not do any thing. Simply observe the thoughts as a pure, mute witness. Do not panic or react in any manner. Just watch or observe. Do not form any opinion. This is the best way taught by some seers. The second way is to divert attention to some ennobling thoughts. By this way you can by pass desire. nagarajan.

There are very easy ways to do this. With the help of religion it can be done. Today religion has become just few practices and customs done during certain moments of our life. Like going to Church on Sundays, mosques on Friday & temples on few auspicious times. But actually Religion means the way of life. It should be a complete guideline for human dealing with all the issues of a normal human being. It should control every minute of our life. This can be done by remembering death at all times. There is nothing wrong in thinking about death bcos that is the only thing which is going to happen in all human's life. It is a sort of optimism in pessimism. Also if we believe that one day we are accountable for all our actions be it small or big, has the immediate advantage of controlling our bad desires. Before we go into the debate of if it is going to happen, we have this advantage in this life itself. Today if you look at newspapers, other news it is all happening becos of bad desires. Be it George Bush or a black poor man in Somalia, all problems arise with the bad desires being fulfilled.

I believe desires need to be controlled, not suppressed, so that they don't become greed. For material/spiritual growth & development of humanity, it is essential to have to desires. They are the driving force for achievement of our goals. India could never have attained independence had there been no desire for freedom...
The trick to control desire is thru the purification of heart & soul.... to have faith in yourself and truely feel connected with, and be a part of your environment. This gives one strength, courage and wisdom to make a choice between right and wrong...and hence take control of one's life.

Desire is the natural function of the soul. Desire can never be stoped at anytime, but the material desires which are the causes of the sadripus, viz., lust, anger, greed, illusion, madness and envy, can be spiritualised into spiritual desires in relation to God.

One can not supress his desires because he is greedy by nature.

Our greed should be for the divine world and not material world.

Then also we will not be able to supress our desires, because of our access to the infinite and divine world.

Some greed is good. For instance, 'greed' for knowledge. Greed for money can be good too, if you are ethical. It's always unethical to commit fraud for money. But, suppose you work overtime at a job due to greed for money - most wouldn't consider this unethical.

Don't supress them. Just don't act on them

This is kids' stuff. Every kid is taught that s/he has impulses, feelings, and desires that s/he ought not to act on.

That doesn't mean they go away. It means that we notice them and move on. It's far better to tell the truth to ourselves about what is so and then go on. If we begin to suppress or lie to ourselves about these things, it becomes easier and easier to lie to ourselves about our actions, too.

It's not particularly healthy to suppress.

It's not automatic to act on things, either.

Your feelings, desires, thoughts, and so on are things you *have*, not who you are.

I pray to God that He would humble my heart, that He would forgive me my selfishness and my lusting after the things of the flesh, and that He would instead turn my desires to things that would glorify Him, not things of the world.

P.S. I have to do this daily, sometimes several times a day.

Give into them. Suppression makes them only stronger.
