I actually just heard that yesterday and I too like it (it was apropos of a situation I was in yesterday). It's from the play "No Exit".

Maybe someone needs to do the Emperor's New Clothes bit, here... I don't get it. It depends on your interpretation, and only a few interpretations I've read here make any sense.
I love solitude. But if I interpret the quote to mean it's awful being around other people, then it depends on the people! I've *hated* being around other people at times -- when they're rude, arrogant, selfish, inconsiderate, loud, closed-minded, obnoxious, judgmental, stupid, deceitful, etc. At those moments I long to live in the desert or on an island, believe me! I've *fantasized* that people like that are forced to live with only their own ilk.
But Hell could also be life *without* other people -- any people at all. I have many loved ones I don't want to live without, and I know there are many good people in the world whom I've never met. I'd like them all to stay around.
So the quote is too general to be useful, for me... except at those moments...

It's a cool sounding quote - but it's wrong. Have you ever had to spend time away from someone you really loved?
Hell is "being held away". Against your will, with nothing you can do about it. Forever. Seperation from God.
