It can be a good idea... or it can be a very bad idea. That depends very much on the individual, their motivation for having it done, how long they've spent thinking about it, what they're having done, and so on. Going with all your friends at age 18 to a tattoo studio, on the spur of the moment, picking something off the wall and all getting it done = probably not a great idea. Getting a tattoo done to commemorate a deceased relative, a custom design that symbolises their life = very meaninful and often a source of great comfort. Context is everything.

In terms of where to have a tattoo, this depends partly on what you're having. Different parts of the body are shaped differently and therefore suit different shapes of tattoo. A good tattoo artist can give you advice on this.

And in terms of what to get, again, that's an intensely personal thing. No-one can decide that apart from the person getting tattooed; it's something that takes thought. You could have pretty much anything as a tattoo, and I can't really narrow that down...

Hope this helps!

A tattoo is only a good idea if you really know what you want, just going inside a tattoo shop and picking out whatever flash they have on the wall that you think is cool is the wrong way to go.

If you're looking for something that you can cover up with a shirt or something then go for your back/shoulder area or your ankles.

The design? Well just choose something that really fits you, whatever you're into. If the artist you go to is even good -at all-, you could bring him an idea and a few reference pictures and he'll be able to make something completely original for you...and if you don't like what he draws up, he will more than likely redo it for you.

i have quite a few original tattoos so i know what i'm talking about. And your tattoos won't shrivel up with age or anything like that, well if you don't watch your body it -might- but that's a health issue on your part. but the most it will do is fade a little.

I consider that only you can make that decision.

However, it is known that some people are allergic to the contents in inks, so you might actually end up in a hospital - in an extreme case. Likewise, tattooing inks contain minerals that are toxic to the body and are released throughout the years, inhibiting the functions of your kidneys, causing more trouble. The tools that create tattoos and piercings can easily introduce potentially deadly infections and toxic foreign substances into the body and bloodstream. Also, tattoo dyes can cause an allergic dernal reaction, leaving you with an itchy rash that can reoccur, even years after you've gotten the tattoo. Some health providers warn that even tiny puncture wounds might block important electrical nerve impulses just under the skin.

There's even another reason why I would't get one. Some dyes change color and look horrible after some years - all the color is lost and the initial appeal of the tattoo is completely lost.

I would suggest that you think it twice before getting one.

I got a couple of cool ones. The best way to decide on a tattoo is to visit more than one tattoo shop and talk to the artist and people who have tattoo, look at the design, go thru pictures and draw some up. Think it over and then make the decision.

A tattoo is a great idea for someone who really wants one. The person should have a good idea of what they want and it always helps if the tattoo itself has a significant meaning to the person. The most regrettable tattoos are often the ones that were picked off of a wall or done by a crappy artist. Do your research and avoid getting something for the sake of being trendy.

Make sure you know exactly what you want before you get it tattooed on yourself, and make sure it's something you can live with for the rest of your life. Ask around and find a reputable place to do it.

As for where on your body, I'd recommend someplace that can be easily covered up, because most employers don't like visible tattoos. Don't believe the people who say they're painful, most tattoos don't hurt. The only exception is someplace like your ankle, I got one there & it hurt like hell and I was limping later that night. My other one is on my upper arm, and it didn't hurt.

Hope this helped, and good luck!

Take your time...I'm lover of good art and that is what a tattoo is. Pick one that reflects you or a time in your life. Find the right artist......very important., even if it cost you a little more.
Chose that place with care as well, think n if you would want to show it all the time or just when you want.
Good Luck and enjoy if you do get one.

A tattoo is personal. It's something that you're going to have to live w/for the rest of your life. If you're unsure about it or just want to get something that you think everyone else will like, you're probably not ready. But what the heck do I know. Do whatever makes you happy!

if you don't know if you actually want a tattoo and whether it is a good idea for you, then don't get one.
if you don't know where you may or may not want to get a tattoo, then don't get one.
and definitely if you don't know WHAT to get then don't get one.

tattoos are a very personal thing. different people get them for different reasons and there are many great tattoo options for everybody but not any one tattoo will fit any one person.

i have a great amount of disdain for tattooes. i don't think anything is as beautiful as unblemished skin so, i guess that is why i personally feel that way. in my mind's eye, tattooes are exactly that: blemishes upon the skin. i would never date anyone with a tattoo. they are that unattractive to me.

plus, i have heard guys say tattooes make a girl 'look nasty' lots of times, which is a title i've never wanted to wear and to me, is something to think about when choosing to get one.

if you don't mind the risk of being classified that way at first glance or, rejected because a person can't stand them the way i can't stand them and you truly like them as much as i dislike them, i would say go ahead and do what makes you feel best about you.

BUT do yourself a favor, don't get it where a prospective employer will ever see it or, in a place that will limit the type of clothes you can wear while concealing it. be protective of your future and your image when selecting a site for it - they probably will not be in style forever, you know?
