I love St John and St Thomas, but they are very pricey. Anyone ever rented a condo and have a good experience with a particular complex?

I can't stand the Grand Bahama Island... I can't handle paying 10.00 for a crappy sandwich, and yucky grocery markets.

Basically I want some opinions on where I can go that has a lot of the conveniences of home (Nice grocery stores, good restaurants, cleanliness?) It needs to be livable, somewhere I could go for several months and not miss home! With beautiful/clean beaches and warm water.

I have never been to Hawaii or Maui, any opinions on them?

Also it'd be nice if I didn't have to worry TOO much about a hurricane destroying the place every year. =D

Thanks!

I live on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic. Historically since they have kept records no hurricane has ever touched down here. That was one of the reasons I moved here.

Cost of property here is 1/3rd of Costa Rica and Costa Rica has HALF the infrastructure that we have here. Way less than the Islands you mentioned!

You can get a typical Dominican Meal for about $3 bux US and that is with Meat, chicken or pork.

I rent out 2 bed/2 bath 1377 sq. ft. Lux condo 1.5 blocks to the main beach, restaurants and nitelife yet on a quiet block for 1300-1500 a month depending on the season. These same condos are for sale in my building from 140- 180k.

I can walk to two supermarkets also.

All you need to purchase a home besides money is a passport. There is NO real estate taxes yearly here. Only a tax when you buy and sell.

I love this place and even Donald Trump just announced a high end project here.

One last thing. This is more than a Island. It is a country with a mean temp of 82 degrees F all year and it has the highest peak in the caribbean that gets snow often. We have dessert and lush tropical mountains within an hour drive. We have cosmopolitan cities and we have non touristy beach towns. This place is great.

as an American, your options are limited; you need a "Land License" for example to buy in Antigua which could take up to a year to get; independent nation islands are also subject to changes of governments and changes of attitudes to Americans..you wouldn't be doing well in Venezuela today for example.......

yes STT and StJ are pricey but compared to what? Martha's Vineyard? Block Island Catalina?

deduct the cost of shoveling snow and heating oil from your cost of living....

conveniences of home.....further away form the mainland you get the bigger the differences....VI have clean modern supermarkets, decent roads, good restaurants, phone/cable service..........the further from here you go the lower the quality of all the above.....

I think you should buy a home anywhere, except in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. That island nation is far to beautiful for anyone but vincentians to live there.

Besides, we already have Mick Jagger, Bill Gates and a whole slew of rich and famous people living here in big houses that take a lot of land which would be better used in supporting the poor people who live here and can't afford to buy their own homes and land because of all the rich people.
