They see increasing intelligence as a way to decrease superstition. on average, the less education a person (in america) has, the more likely they are to believe things the church (or any other group with power, like the North Korean govt) tells them. This isn't inherently bad, though it often ends up that way. It's about gullibility.

For me, it's not about "intelligence" it's about achieving wisdom and higher understanding. Read Plato's Divided Line theory and you'll see what I'm talking about. It's amazing how some people are still "cave dwellers" and can see nothing but shadows and that's what they think is reality. This is what I see when I look at people who follow a "God" that they allow to think for them, rather than thinking for themselves.
